Our season begins in May, with the opening of fishing. Depending upon the weather, the trees are just beginning to swell with buds. The leaves pop out sometime between the second and fourth week of the month. For a few days, we enjoy the chartreuse green that means spring has truly arrived. June brings longer days, as we head towards the solstice. Wildflowers are blooming everywhere, including pink moccasin flowers. These are a relative of the showy lady slipper, our state flower. The dragonflies hatch, and the kids are in swimming nearly everyday. Hiking, canoeing, and boating are excellent activities during the summer. On the hot days, the water is the place to be. Bridal Falls is a three-mile paddle away. Boat picnics are a refreshing way to enjoy dining al fresco. Strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries are beginning to ripen at different times in July and August. Take a hike for some yummy picking. A particular favorite of some, thimbleberries usually ripen during August. For one of our guests, a place exists termed "Thimbleberry Heaven"----but he is not letting on as to the location! July also brings the annual canoe races on Gunflint Lake. This fundraiser for the Gunflint Trail Volunteer Fire Department features races for all ages, a picnic, and a raffle. They are held on the third Wednesday. By the time August rolls around, we are well-settled into summer. The days are filled with water fun, exploring, reading and relaxing. During the evenings, folks gather around the campfire, making s'mores, telling jokes and stories, and watching the sunsets until the stars come out. If we stay up late enough, we might catch a glimpse of the northern lights. Although autumn doesn't officially begin until the 23rd of September, we usually see early signs of it in late summer. The underbrush begins to turn yellow, as if a prelude to the symphony of color yet to come. The days are still comfortable, the nights cool, and the bugs are gone! This is a great month to do some early morning canoeing. Mist will rise from the lake as the sun is coming up. The animals and birds begin their preparations for winter. The squirrels gather seeds and nuts to hide in the most extraordinary places. The changing colors of the leaves delight us through September and the beginning of October. Then it seems a wind will come through and take them all to the ground. Walks in the woods at this time reveal an interesting world: nature preparing for the long winter ahead. BREAD OVEN In the spring of 2004, the North House Folk School came to Heston's and built us a beautiful wood-fired bread oven. Our hope was that it would become a sort of community affair with guests, neighbors, family and friends all getting together to bake, visit, and of course, sample the delicious breads and pizza that emerge from the oven. It has been all this and more, and you are all welcome to come bake with us. Thank you to the North House, instructor Alan Scott, assistant Julie and all of the students we had so much fun meeting. Sorry, these are only pictures. You can't eat them. |
