Breaking News from Planet Heston's

Somewhere along the way, I may have lost a season.......

Because now it is summer!  Winter was a bit late in coming, finally making a grand appearance just in time for our Winter Tracks Festival on March 1st.  Though not everyone was able to make it through the blizzard for the weekend, those that did had a wonderful time.  Barb had so much fun at the dance that she ruptured her achilles tendon!  It is fully healed now, and though she won't be dancing soon, she is gaining strength and moving along.  Be sure to join us next year, first weekend in March, for the 4th Annual Winter Tracks Festival.

And then the fire came.......

Many of you already know about the Ham Lake Fire, a wildfire that came through the upper Gunflint Trail area, beginning May 5.  That is a day we won't soon forget.  For more information on the fire, you can check out the following websites:

Summer Days Ahead

The official start of summer is still a few days away, but it already feels like we're there.  The sun is high and strong, we've been getting rain lately, and of course, there are a few bugs around.  But they won't stop us from doing all the wonderful things we like to do in summer.  We will be firing up the bread oven this week for pizza and bread baking.  Boats and canoes are in the water and ready to float.  The cabins are open and waiting for guests to arrive.  We still have openings throughout much of the summer, including some of the popular weeks in August.  Give us a call to start planning your northwoods getaway now!

Alaska 2006: A Trip Journal

In early September, our son Robert headed out for Alaska.  He plans to spend at least the winter there. The following two stories are from the journal that Greg kept as he accompanied Robert on his road trip.

Day One

We had packed just about all that we thought we’d need--except a coffee pot and a wide base travel mug, the kind they made before cars had all those cup holders.  It would sit on your desk without tipping over or sloshing all that much.  Of course, we could have brought one from here, but I didn’t want to carry it back on the plane.  We were driving to Alaska in Robert’s pick-up...

Day Five--Continued

While chowing down on the last of Barb’s ciabatta, some cheese and smoked salmon, alongside one such river, Robert pointed up to the river’s source.  It was a glistening face of a hanging glacier, a mile or two up a rock-walled gorge.  He asked if I wanted to hike up to it.  I said, “Sure, let me change boots”, and off we went,....

Brooks Range Campfire Tales

In 1999, we bought a recently retired Ford school buys that had spent its life hauling kids in Saco, Montana. After some seat and stop arm removal, kitchen and bunk bed reconstruction, the addition of a small woodstove and a generous coat of Ford Meadow green paint, we were ready to roll. We had ourselves a primitive but comfortable rolling cabin.
